The Department of Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering was formed by the integration of four units: the former Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation Teaching and Research Office, Metal Technology Teaching and Research Office, CIMS Research Institute, and Special Processing Research Institute.
The major of Mechanical Manufacturing is the earliest undergraduate major of Mechanical Engineering established in 1969. In 1981, the Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation major was authorized to grant Master degrees, and in 1990, it received authorization to grant doctoral degrees. In 1999, the special professor positions of "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" were established in the field of Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation.
